A few weeks ago I shared a chart that provided the basic skills children should know before the 1st day of kindergarten. This chart list the basic skills that many children should possess for a smooth transition into kindergarten. This chart is not to fancy, not confusing and basically gets straight to the point. It shares with parents the BASIC skills that kindergarten teachers are looking for when your son or daughter enters their classroom. This information is useful and important information that every parent should know. If you need a copy of it, you can DOWNLOAD IT HERE!
Well, I'm excited to share that due to the overwhelming response, I developed monthly calendars that will correlate with the skills on the prekindergarten skills chart. Each month a new chart will be released with ideas and activities that can be incorporated into your everyday routine. The goal is to teach, model and practice these skills in a fun loving way. These activites will be budget friendly and family friendly. Anyone and everyone will be able to incorporate these activities into their busy daily routine.
Take a look at May's calendar below.
Who Should Use This Calendar ?
All families with preschoolers, pre-k students and some kindergarten students.
Students who attend public schools, private schools, are home schooled or have no formal education at all.
Any parent with a young child entering kindergarten within 1-2 years will benefit from this calendar.
How do I know?
After being a kindergarten teacher for many years, I noticed that many basic skills are overlooked; sometimes parents rely on others to teach these skills or they spend to much time focused on just academics. Either way the student suffers and struggles in the classroom environment because they are missing the basic skills that will help them have a successful kindergarten journey.
How Does it Work ?
Each calendar is colorful and kid friendly. It's your basic calendar however on each day an activity is listed for your son or daughter to practice a specific skill. The best way to practice these skill is to make them apart of your daily routine. Please keep in mind this is practice. If they struggle with the skill keep note of it (mentally or on the calendar). There will be opportunities for them to practice the skill again at a later date. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
Be creative when using the calendar. Think of ways to incorporate it into your daily life. Maybe you can put it on your refrigerator and practice the daily activity before dinner. How about in their bedroom on the wall. The possibilities are endless. The fun part is that you can use this opportunity to conversate with your little ones. Have them look forward to spending this time with you.
Also, remember to share the calendar with your child. Give them some ownership of their new learning adventure (they will need this skill in school). Create an environment that promotes learning and growing.
It's a Win-Win
If you use this calendar even once the best case scenario is that your child will learn skills they didn't have or perfect the skills they have😁. The worse case scenario, is that you realize that someone is doing their job because your child already knows these skill 😁. So its really not the worse case scenario after all. Its a win -win.
Trust me when I say. It's a relief to know that your child knows and understands the basic skills many schools require before kindergarten.
